Gospels of Henry the Lion, 1175-88
Illumination on parchment, 340 x 255 mm
Herzog-August-Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel
Henry the Lion was the son-in-law of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II. Around 1188, he and his wife Mathilde commissioned this magnificent manuscript from Helmarshausen Abbey for use on the altar of the newly-built Brunswick Cathedral. It contains all four gospels, and 50 of its 266 pages are exquisitely illuminated. Research by Aliza Cohen-Mushlin supports the belief that it was inscribed by a single monk, named Herriman. Its survival, virtually intact, for the past 800 years has made it even more extraordinary. It was auctioned for 7.4 million British pounds in 1983, a record at the time, and returned to Germany, where it is displayed on rare occaisions.
